Your emotions are not problems to solve. They are waves to ride — and your design holds the surfboard.

If you have a defined Solar Plexus center in your Human Design chart, roughly half the population does, then you are what’s called an “emotional being.” Your emotions don’t happen to you randomly. They move in a wave — a reliable, repeating pattern that is uniquely yours. And understanding that wave is one of the most transformative things you can do for your life, your relationships, and your decision-making.

For women especially, this knowledge is liberating. We’ve been told our emotions are too much, too unpredictable, too irrational. Human Design says the opposite: your emotional wave is your greatest intelligence. You just need to learn how to read it.

What Is the Emotional Wave?

The Solar Plexus center in Human Design is the center of emotional energy and spirit awareness. When it’s defined (colored in) on your chart, it means you generate your own emotional energy. You don’t pick it up from others — you broadcast it.

Your emotional wave moves between highs and lows in a pattern that is consistent for you, though the specifics depend on which gates and channels define your Solar Plexus. Some waves are dramatic — sharp peaks and deep valleys. Others are gentle, rolling swells. Some spike suddenly and crash. Others build slowly and release gradually.

The critical thing to understand: there is no truth in the moment for emotional beings. Your clarity comes over time, as you ride through the full wave. A decision that feels absolutely right at the peak of your wave may feel terrible at the valley — and vice versa. Neither extreme holds the whole truth. The truth lives in the middle, in the pattern, in the waiting.

The Three Types of Emotional Waves

The Tribal Wave (Needs-Based)

Connected to gates 19, 37, 49, and 55, this wave is driven by need and touch. It builds slowly, like a pot of water on the stove, and then erupts when needs aren’t met. If you carry this wave, you may seem calm and accommodating for weeks until suddenly something breaks through.

What it feels like: Long stretches of “I’m fine” punctuated by intense emotional releases. You might cry unexpectedly, snap at someone, or have what feels like a breakdown that was actually a breakthrough. After the release, you feel clear again.

Sacred feminine wisdom: Your wave is teaching you to honor your needs before they become emergencies. The eruption isn’t the problem — the silence before it is. Practice naming your needs daily, even the small ones. Especially the small ones.

The Individual Wave (Creative/Melancholic)

Connected to gates 22, 12, and 39, this wave moves between melancholy and joy without any external trigger. You can wake up sad on a beautiful day or ecstatic in a mundane moment. There’s no logical reason for the shift — and that’s the point.

What it feels like: A deep, moody rhythm that others might call unpredictable but that has its own internal logic. You’re the artist, the poet, the one who feels the full spectrum of human emotion as creative fuel. Your melancholy isn’t depression — it’s depth.

Sacred feminine wisdom: Stop trying to fix your low moods. They are not broken. Your sadness carries wisdom, creativity, and empathy that your joy cannot access. The feminine has always known this — that darkness and light are equally sacred.

The Abstract Wave (Experiential)

Connected to gates 36 and 35, this wave is about desire and experience. It starts with a crash — an emotional low that creates a longing for something new. Then it builds with anticipation and excitement as you move toward the experience, peaks during the experience itself, and crashes again as you process it.

What it feels like: A repeating cycle of wanting, pursuing, experiencing, and processing. You’re the one who needs new experiences to feel alive. Travel, new relationships, creative projects, adventures — you’re driven by the emotional thrill of the journey.

Sacred feminine wisdom: Your crashes aren’t failures. They’re the integration phase where your spirit processes what you’ve experienced. Don’t start something new to avoid the low. Sit in it. The next wave of desire will come on its own.

Emotional Authority: Making Decisions with Your Wave

If your Solar Plexus is defined, you have emotional authority — regardless of your type. This means your decision-making process requires time. Not logic. Not gut instinct. Time.

Here’s how it works in practice:

Step 1: Feel the initial response. When a decision presents itself, notice your first emotional reaction. Is it excitement? Fear? Eagerness? Dread? Note it, but don’t act on it.

Step 2: Wait. This is the hard part. Sleep on it. Ideally, wait through several cycles of your wave — at least a few days for moderate decisions, longer for major life changes. Notice how the decision feels at different points in your wave.

Step 3: Notice the pattern. If you feel good about the decision at the peak AND still okay about it at the valley, that’s your clarity. If it only feels right at the top and terrible at the bottom, you don’t have clarity yet.

Step 4: Act from the middle. Choose to act when you’re neither extremely high nor extremely low. The middle ground of your wave is where your deepest wisdom lives.

What this means practically: Don’t accept the job offer at the interview. Don’t say yes to the relationship in the rush of chemistry. Don’t sign the lease the day you see the apartment. Give yourself time. Your wave will show you the truth — if you let it.

Living with an Undefined Solar Plexus

If your Solar Plexus is open (white), you don’t have your own emotional wave. Instead, you absorb and amplify the emotions of everyone around you. You feel other people’s feelings more intensely than they feel them themselves.

The gift: Extraordinary emotional wisdom. You can read a room instantly. You know what others are feeling before they do. You’re the empath, the counselor, the one people come to because you understand.

The trap: Taking on emotions that aren’t yours and making decisions from them. That anxiety you feel in crowded places? Not yours. That sadness when your partner comes home from work? Probably theirs. That excitement from a charismatic salesperson? Definitely theirs.

Sacred feminine practice for open Solar Plexus: - Before any decision, ask: “Is this emotion mine?” If it intensifies when you’re with certain people and disappears when you’re alone, it’s not yours. - Create daily alone time to return to your emotional baseline. You need solitude like emotional beings need time. - Stop trying to fix other people’s emotions. You can feel them, you can understand them, but they’re not yours to process.

Your Emotional Wave and Relationships

Understanding your emotional wave transforms relationships. If both partners have emotional authority, decisions need even more time — you’re both riding waves that may not sync up. If one partner is emotional and the other isn’t, the non-emotional partner needs to understand that the emotional partner’s feelings aren’t personal attacks or instability. They’re a wave.

For emotional women in relationships: Stop apologizing for your emotions. Stop saying “I don’t know why I’m crying.” You’re cycling through your wave, and that’s not only normal — it’s your design functioning correctly. The right partner won’t ask you to flatten your wave. They’ll learn to ride it with you.

For open Solar Plexus women in relationships with emotional partners: You’re amplifying their wave. When they’re up, you feel even higher. When they’re down, you feel the valley twice as deep. Create space for yourself. Their wave is not your responsibility.

Practical Tools for Riding Your Wave

  1. Track your emotions for 30 days. Just a simple note each morning and evening — number from 1 to 10, and a word or two about how you feel. After a month, you’ll start seeing your wave pattern.

  2. Stop making decisions on peak days. Those days when everything feels amazing and you want to say yes to everything? Note the opportunities, but don’t commit. See how they feel in three days.

  3. Honor your valley days. Cancel plans if you need to. Take baths. Write. Be quiet. The valley is where your deepest creativity and wisdom live. It’s not a place to escape from — it’s a place to mine.

  4. Communicate your wave to loved ones. “I’m in a low part of my wave today. I don’t need fixing — I need gentleness.” This one sentence can transform your closest relationships.

  5. Stop comparing your emotional rhythm to others. Your wave is yours. It’s not better or worse than anyone else’s — it’s your unique emotional intelligence system, designed perfectly for your life.

Your emotional wave is not your weakness. It’s your sacred feminine superpower — the part of you that feels deeply, knows intuitively, and ultimately guides you to the decisions that are truly right for you. Trust it. Ride it. Let it carry you home.
